Saab 9-3 Aero in Convertible version to admire the interior details

The love story between Saab and DNA Collectibles has been here since the foundation of our company, and the emotion remains intact ! We built a strong Saab aficionados community over the years, and you were numerous to request us to reproduce the Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible. So this is our way to thank you!
You also asked for the following body colors : Lime Yellow Metallic, Black, and Chili Red Metallic. So here we go, select your favorite color my friends !

Time to talk about the 1/18 scale model car replica of the Saab 9-3 Aero Cabriolet, and let’s start with the exterior.
First of all, she comes with a powerful Aero kit version featuring the very typical, interesting and well reproduced following details:

  • the front splitter, side skirts, and the rear diffuser
  • the spoiler
  • the five spokes twin alloy rims with the Saab logo integrated on the center cap
  • and the single chromed exhaust pipe

Regarding the front of the scale model car, the engraved headlights and fog lights are minutious as usual. Below the Saab logo applied on the hood, the fine perforated front grill from which you can see the radiator inside and surrounded by aluminum trims is perfectly replicated. You can even read the Saab inscription on the central aluminum part of the front grill. Just below, the matt black protection trims are directing us harmoniously from the front bumper, passing by the sides, to finish its run to the rear bumper… What a transition to move to the rear of the car!
We didn’t miss anything in the rear of the scale model car either: the “93” and “Aero” badges, the radio and GPS antennas on the trunk, or the fine replicated trunk key lock... everything is there.

Making a convertible version with a removable roof is fun ! Yes, but only if you can assume the necessary level of details inside the car because you cannot hide behind anything ! So let’s see if we did a good job on that part.
We need to talk again about the Aero kit which also involves specific features in the cockpit fantastically reproduced:

  • the 6-speed gear lever (so fine that you can actually read the speeds on it)
  • the 2 tones leather effect upholstery
  • the metallic trim pack especially on the steering wheel, center console and the door handles
  • the leather effect body hugging sports seats shape

The dashboard and the central console details are just astonishing. All the tiny details are finely replicated : the integrated GPS, the multitude of buttons, the ignition key lock next to the gear lever, the famous turbo gauge on the instrument cluster... It is a delight.
Instead of moulding everything into one massive resin block to make it easier, we prefer to add several separate parts to bring as much realism as possible such as the steering wheel (integrating the Saab logo and all the buttons), the commodos, the hand brake, the door handles and the central mirror.
In the same spirit, we also applied photo etched parts for the speakers and for the buckle of the seat belts made of real fabric !

Development of the Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible - 2005

How long does it take to develop a 1 18 scale model? More or less between 9 to 12 months depending on the complexity.

The very first step consists in finding the perfect model to launch with the following goals: to maximize the success of the release and to meet our community’s and customers’ satisfaction. To ensure these goals, we have several tools at our disposal:

  • Our personal feelings and expectations (we are also passionate collectors, don’t forget it!)
  • Expert opinions
  • And last but not least, we ask our community and friends from several social media groups their expectations on models, versions, colors...

Shake everything, and we end up with the best next model to work on. In this case, the Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible second generation from 2005 in 3 different colors (Lime Yellow Metallic, Black and Chili Red Metallic) won the prize!

The version of 2005 is recent enough to allow us to gather easily a complete, accurate and relevant documentation to work on the 3D file. A dedicated engineer is in charge of producing a 3D file at 1/18 scale to prepare the future steps. At this stage, the 3D helps us to digitally visualize our future masterpiece, part per part, the global shape of the body and all other aspects of the miniature car.

When we are satisfied with the 3D, an artist creates what we call the master. The master is a grey prototype without any paint or decoration. At this level, we focus our attention to the shapes, angles, proportions, the separate parts put all together… We basically check on this first master sample if the 3D has a correct outcome.

After the validation of the master, this is now the time to issue a decorated sample. This one is painted, fully assembled and glued, the photo etched parts are applied… This is the very first version of the final scale model car as it is supposed to be in mass production ! We used the tooling of the future production to issue the deco sample, so this stage is very important from a manufacturing point of view, because we need to validate if the tooling is correct to produce perfect high end scale model car replicas at the end.

Finally, when the deco sample of the Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible is validated, we can officially launch the production!
