The pinnacle of Saabs’ cars : the Saab 900 T16 Airflow
The Saab 900 is considered as the pinnacle of Saabs’ cars and was produced by the Swedish car manufacturer in two generations. We will focus here on the first generation, known as “classic”, manufactured between 1978 and 1993. More specifically, we decided to reproduce in a 1/18 scale model car the Saab 900 Turbo T16 Airflow special version which was elected “most beautiful Saab ever” at the Saab festival in June 2007 in Trollhättan.
T16 stands for “turbo” and for the 4 valves per cylinder making 16 of them in total. It is also interesting to notice that this car has two different designations : 900 Aero in Europe, and 900 SPG (Special Performance Group) in North America.
The specifications of the Saab 900 T16 Airflow were quite impressive for that time:
- 175 HP
- Acceleration 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 sec
- Top speed 217 km/h (135 mph)
- 5000 rpm and 235 N⋅m (173 lb⋅ft)
We decided to reproduce at 1 18 scale the most desirable special Airflow kit with the following aerodynamic features: the front and rear bumpers, the side skirts, the spoiler extension, and the lateral air vents.
